Stepping out into the night to the cricket songs and the sound of the wind shifting the clouds overhead.
The night sky is easy on the eyes, providing a gentle reprieve from the harsh brightness of the day.
Sitting down with a drink in hand and the cool air upon my skin, I take in the ambiance as the melancholia sinks in.

You are not alone…
In this, I can assure you.
I am here for you.

coffee haiku

Time for some coffee,
oh, such glorious nectar,
fuel for my body…

There is this seething, roiling rage rising
to the surface… threatening to consume.
There’s this paranoia so harrowing
playing off the little fears. Stop. Resume.

There is this disconnect, so maddening
with its dissonance and tenacity…
There’s a din that’s drowning out everything,
overwhelming in its intensity.

Disconnect

I want to rage, I want to disappear…
These emotions can bring forth old aspects.
Should I withdraw from the world once again
and become forgotten like the lost gods of long ago?

This sadness eats away at me…
This silence unsettles the mind.
Should I turn my back on the world and fade
like a memory losing its clarity?

…and here I am.
On that precipice with the jagged rocks
which cuts into the soul with each movement,
stepping into my crucible.

Beginnings

In the darkness, where the gloom resides,
thoughts, unbidden and unchallenged,
begin to rise.
Cast aside, on the fringe,
forgotten by a world moving on,
a harrowing heralds a storm.
At that precipice, that crucial crucible,
where mettle is tested,
an uneasiness threatens to take hold.
Take a step forward and let the day begin.

Another Bout of Insomnia

Another night gone by
Another day arrives
Another blurring of
the border between the two
into a stream of consciousness…

What Happened, America?

What happened, America?
When did you change
from a land of opportunity
and freedom of thought,
and a multicultural melting pot
with open arms…
into a land of fear,
mistrust,
abuse,
ignorance,
alienation,
blindness,
and hate?

When did you forget who you are?
Instead, we see a sickness growing within,
hidden behind veneers
of placating platitudes
and smoke and mirrors.
What happened to rights and equality?
Opportunity and liberty?
Even the notion of democracy has begun to falter…
What happened to your ideals?

When did it become acceptable
to take advantage of those desperate for a change
and deny them opportunity?
When did it become acceptable
to look upon someone who came to your open arms
and treat them differently?
When did it become acceptable
to strip one another’s freedoms
and impose our will upon fellow citizens?

We focus on the negative
making one another ashamed of,
and hostile towards
our differences…
Whether it is melanin content,
or spiritual beliefs,
or sexual preferences.

Is this the land of the free and the home of the brave?
For which countless sons and daughters
have shed their blood and sacrificed their lives?

Now, what I see is such a disparity
between who you were and who you are now,
that it saddens me…
for I am one of those sons who had sacrificed…
What happened, America?

Meet me at the Crossroads

Meet me at the place
where the suicides
are laid to rest

That point of liminality
betwixt and between
Neither here nor there

If you require my assistance
meet me at the small hour
be sure to bring your due

Meet me at the crossroads
by the willow tree
to palaver and deal
