I just want to sleep…
So that I can fast forward to the next day
And slow down my brain and not be plagued by these thoughts
That threaten to push me over the edge.

Sleep beckons,
yet the mind,
ever stubborn…
Refuses to comply

Overanalyze Over Overthink

So here’s the thing… I haven’t slept, partly due to being on the phone for the past couple hours…
However, that is not the sole reason why I have not slept. My mind is, what some would say, very active…. So sleep can be rather scarce at times.
For instance, certain terms in use today can occupy my thoughts… Terms such as “overthink.” This term makes no sense. It seems fallacious to me.
I want to make a motion to strike the term “overthink” (and conjugations thereof) from regular use and replace it with the term “overanalyze” which can lead to “analysis paralysis.” Hence, I feel it would be more appropriate. Without resorting to colloquialisms, how, precisely, can one “overthink”? Are we not always thinking on topics that hold our attention throughout the day and mentally flit between them and the new ones that crop up as we go about our daily and nightly routines?

Hour: 42

…at some point, I should hypothetically fall asleep rather easily.
Alas, my mind is in overdrive locked in cogitation. Reflecting upon events and aspects of life, like many would who find themselves in a fit of restless insomnia. Thoughts branching out into several threads as memories begin to surface. Ideas for stories, recollections of dreams, and reflections of past conversations provide the fuel for rumination while summoning up the motivation to work on some class assignments. Anticipations and contemplation of future plans bring forth energy from hidden reserves.

These Thoughts

These thoughts need dissolution,
because they fill my head so…
thoughts of love,
thoughts of joy,
thoughts of sorrow,
thoughts of loss,
thoughts that are too many and need to be let go…
What I wouldn’t do for
some way to think less and find a way to sleep…
The variables and the probabilities plague my mind,
the modus tollens, the modus ponens, more syllogism nightmares.
Sleep eludes me,
evading my clutches,
that clever somnambulant demon…
This pillow is not enough, my brain is afire…
Fully active on overdrive…
thoughts of scenarios and stories
thoughts of my world and my desires…
thoughts of family and of friends and of those I left behind…
What I wouldn’t give for some sleep
free of the things that plague me every time I shut my eyes…
